Mountain Passes of India: The State-Wise Memory Map That Ends the Confusion

Mountain passes are among the highest-yielding yet most error-prone areas of UPSC Prelims Geography, because the examiner rarely asks "what is a pass" and almost always asks "which state, which range, which two places". This note maps every important Himalayan and Peninsular pass on a single west-to-east mental highway, attaches a memory hook to each, and then isolates the specific pairs that aspirants habitually swap in the exam hall.

1. Ladakh: The Karakoram-Ladakh-Zanskar Cluster

Karakoram Pass - Situated on the Karakoram Range, it is the traditional gateway from Ladakh to Yarkand and Xinjiang in China; it lay on a branch of the ancient Silk Route and is today of high strategic value near the Depsang Plains.
Mnemonic Hook: "KARAKORAM = KAravan to KORea-side China."
Link: Remember it as the northernmost land link India historically used towards Central Asia.

Aghil Pass - Lies north of K2, beyond the main Karakoram Range, connecting Ladakh with the Xinjiang province of China; it is located in the Shaksgam Valley area.
Mnemonic Hook: "AGHIL is A-Gap-HIgher-and-Later - it comes AFTER Karakoram as you move north."
Link: Karakoram first, Aghil beyond it. Alphabetical A-then-K is the wrong order; geography reverses it.

Khardung La - On the Ladakh Range, it connects Leh with the Nubra and Shyok valleys and is the lifeline route towards the Siachen Glacier.
Mnemonic Hook: "KHARdung leads to the KHARdest posting - Siachen."
Link: Leh to Nubra means Khardung La; no other pass performs this job.

Chang La - Also on the Ladakh Range, it is the gateway from Leh to the Changthang plateau and Pangong Tso.
Mnemonic Hook: "CHANG La opens CHANGthang and the lake you saw in the movies."
Link: Chang La and Changthang share the syllable - the pass is named for the plateau it serves.

Zoji La - Located on the Zanskar Range, it connects the Kashmir Valley (Srinagar-Dras) with Ladakh along NH-1 and is the most snow-choked strategic pass in the region; the Zojila Tunnel is being built to keep it open year-round.
Mnemonic Hook: "ZOJI = Zero-Overland-Journey-In-winter."
Link: Zoji La is the bottleneck that isolates Ladakh every winter - hence the tunnel project.

Fotu La - Also on the Zanskar Range, it is the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH-1), higher than Zoji La.
Mnemonic Hook: "FOTU is the photo-point - the highest spot on NH-1."
Link: Zoji La is the hardest point on NH-1; Fotu La is the highest point on NH-1. Two different superlatives.

Umling La - In eastern Ladakh near Demchok, it carries the world's highest motorable road, built by the Border Roads Organisation.
Mnemonic Hook: "UMling = Ultimate-Motorable."
Link: BRO's record-holder, not Khardung La.

Banihal Pass - On the Pir Panjal Range, it connects Jammu with the Kashmir Valley; the Jawahar Tunnel runs beneath it.
Mnemonic Hook: "BANIhal carries the BANI (voice) of Jammu into Kashmir."
Link: Pir Panjal equals Jammu-to-Kashmir; Zanskar equals Kashmir-to-Ladakh.

2. Himachal Pradesh: The Sutlej and Lahaul-Spiti Group

Rohtang Pass - On the Pir Panjal Range, it connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti valleys; the Atal Tunnel now bypasses it and gives all-weather access to Lahaul.
Mnemonic Hook: "ROHTANG literally means 'pile of corpses' - a reminder of how deadly it was before the Atal Tunnel."
Link: Kullu to Lahaul, not Himachal to Tibet. Rohtang is an internal pass, not a border pass.

Shipki La - On the India-Tibet border in Kinnaur district, this is the point where the Sutlej river enters India; it is a designated border trade post.
Mnemonic Hook: "SHIPki - the river SHIPs itself into India here."
Link: Sutlej and Shipki both begin with 'S'. Fix this pair permanently.

Baralacha La - On the Zanskar Range in Lahaul, it lies on the Manali-Leh highway and links Himachal Pradesh with Ladakh.
Mnemonic Hook: "BARA-lacha = the BIG (bara) crossing on the Manali-Leh road."
Link: If the question says Manali-Leh highway, think Baralacha La and Tanglang La.

Kunzum La - Connects the Lahaul Valley with the Spiti Valley, crossing the Kunzum Range.
Mnemonic Hook: "KUNZUM joins the two twins - KUllu-side Lahaul and Spiti."
Link: Rohtang gets you to Lahaul; Kunzum takes you onward to Spiti.

3. Uttarakhand: The Kumaon-Garhwal Border Passes

Mana Pass - In Chamoli district beyond Badrinath, it connects Uttarakhand with Tibet and lies close to the source region of the Alaknanda.
Mnemonic Hook: "MANA is near the MANdir - Badrinath."
Link: Temple town Badrinath equals Mana Pass.

Niti Pass - Also in Chamoli district, it connects Uttarakhand with Tibet through the Niti Valley near the Nanda Devi region.
Mnemonic Hook: "NITI sits NEAR Nanda Devi - both start with N."
Link: Mana equals Badrinath side; Niti equals Nanda Devi side.

Lipulekh Pass - In Pithoragarh district at the trijunction of India, Nepal and China, it is the traditional route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and a point of boundary dispute with Nepal over the Kalapani area.
Mnemonic Hook: "LIPUlekh - the LIP of three countries."
Link: Any question mentioning Kailash Mansarovar or Kalapani points to Lipulekh.

4. Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh: The Eastern Himalayan Gates

Nathu La - In Sikkim, on the Dongkya Range, it connects Gangtok with the Chumbi Valley of Tibet; it was reopened for border trade in 2006 and is one of the officially notified India-China trade posts.
Mnemonic Hook: "NATHU La is the NEW-open one - reopened 2006."
Link: Trade and pilgrimage traffic today means Nathu La.

Jelep La - Also in Sikkim and also leading into the Chumbi Valley, but via the Kalimpong route; it has remained closed since the 1962 war.
Mnemonic Hook: "JELEP is in JAIL - shut since 1962."
Link: Same valley, opposite status. Nathu La open, Jelep La closed.

Se La (Sela Pass) - In Arunachal Pradesh, it connects the Tawang district with the rest of the state and with Assam; the newly built Sela Tunnel gives all-weather access to Tawang.
Mnemonic Hook: "SE La is the Single Entry to Tawang."
Link: Se La is an internal connector, not an international pass.

Bomdi La - In Arunachal Pradesh, it provides a route from the Brahmaputra plains towards Lhasa in Tibet.
Mnemonic Hook: "BOMDI goes BEYOND the border."
Link: Se La to Tawang, Bomdi La to Tibet.

Diphu Pass - At the trijunction of India, Myanmar and China in eastern Arunachal Pradesh, it is strategically significant for access to Myanmar.
Mnemonic Hook: "DIPHU = D for Three (tri) countries in the Deep east."
Link: Lipulekh is the western trijunction pass; Diphu is the eastern one.

Pangsau Pass - On the India-Myanmar border in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, it lies on the historic Stilwell Road (Ledo Road) of the Second World War.
Mnemonic Hook: "PANGSAU is on the PASSage the Allies built - the Stilwell Road."
Link: Any Second World War or Ledo Road reference points to Pangsau Pass.

5. Peninsular India: Gaps of the Western Ghats

Palakkad Gap (Palghat Gap) - The broadest gap in the Western Ghats, roughly 24-30 km wide, connecting Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu with Palakkad in Kerala; it channels the south-west monsoon inland and explains the relatively drier Coimbatore plateau.
Mnemonic Hook: "PALakkad is the PALm-wide gap - the biggest one."
Link: Rail, road and monsoon winds all use this single corridor.

Senkottai Gap (Shencottah Gap) - A narrower southern gap linking Kollam in Kerala with Tirunelveli and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.
Mnemonic Hook: "SENkottai is the Second, Smaller, Southern gap."
Link: Palakkad is north and wide; Senkottai is south and narrow.

Thal Ghat (Kasara Ghat) - In Maharashtra, it connects Mumbai with Nashik.
Mnemonic Hook: "THAL takes you to NashTHik - think 'T for Thal, N for Nashik'."
Link: Thal to Nashik.

Bhor Ghat - In Maharashtra, it connects Mumbai with Pune via the Khandala-Lonavala stretch.
Mnemonic Hook: "BHOR sounds like 'BORe' - the boring daily Mumbai-Pune commute."
Link: Bhor to Pune.

Quick Timeline/Flowchart

Travel the Himalaya from WEST to EAST and the passes fall into place in order:

LADAKH: Karakoram La and Aghil La (far north, towards Xinjiang)

LADAKH: Khardung La and Chang La (Leh's two doors - Nubra and Pangong)

KASHMIR-LADAKH: Zoji La then Fotu La (the NH-1 pair)

JAMMU: Banihal Pass (Pir Panjal, Jawahar Tunnel)

HIMACHAL: Rohtang La and Kunzum La (Kullu to Lahaul to Spiti)

HIMACHAL: Baralacha La (Manali-Leh highway) and Shipki La (Sutlej entry)

UTTARAKHAND: Mana Pass, Niti Pass, Lipulekh Pass (all opening onto Tibet)

SIKKIM: Nathu La and Jelep La (both into the Chumbi Valley)

ARUNACHAL: Se La, Bomdi La, Diphu Pass, Pangsau Pass (Tibet and Myanmar frontiers)

Then drop south to the WESTERN GHATS: Thal Ghat and Bhor Ghat (Maharashtra) → Palakkad Gap → Senkottai Gap (the far south)

Common Confusion Traps

  • Zoji La versus Fotu La. Both sit on the Srinagar-Leh highway and both lie on the Zanskar Range, so aspirants merge them. Fotu La is the highest point on NH-1; Zoji La is the most difficult and most snowbound point, which is why the Zojila Tunnel, not a Fotu La tunnel, is the flagship project. Remember: highest is Fotu, hardest is Zoji.

  • Nathu La versus Jelep La. Both are in Sikkim and both lead into the Chumbi Valley of Tibet, which makes them the single most swapped pair in Prelims. Nathu La was reopened for border trade in 2006; Jelep La, approached via Kalimpong, has stayed closed since the 1962 war. If the question mentions trade, it is Nathu La.

  • Shipki La versus Lipulekh Pass. Both are notified India-China border trade routes, so their states get exchanged. Shipki La is in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, and is where the Sutlej enters India. Lipulekh is in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, is a trijunction with Nepal, and is tied to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the Kalapani dispute. Sutlej goes with Shipki; Kailash goes with Lipulekh.

  • Rohtang Pass is not a border pass. Because it is the most famous pass in Himachal Pradesh, students assume it opens onto Tibet or leads to Ladakh. It does neither. Rohtang connects the Kullu Valley to Lahaul-Spiti within Himachal Pradesh. The Himachal-to-Ladakh link on the Manali-Leh highway is Baralacha La, and the Himachal-to-Tibet link is Shipki La. Also note the tunnels: the Atal Tunnel is under Rohtang, while the Jawahar Tunnel is under Banihal.

  • Se La versus Bomdi La. Both are in Arunachal Pradesh and both featured in the 1962 conflict, so they are treated as interchangeable. Se La is an internal pass that connects Tawang district to the rest of Arunachal Pradesh and now has the Sela Tunnel; Bomdi La is the route running onward towards Lhasa in Tibet. Tawang means Se La; Tibet means Bomdi La.

  • Khardung La versus Umling La. Older material calls Khardung La the world's highest motorable road, and that claim is still widely repeated. For current examination purposes, the world's highest motorable road is at Umling La in eastern Ladakh, built by the Border Roads Organisation. Khardung La's correct identity is the Leh-to-Nubra and Siachen access route.

  • Palakkad Gap versus Senkottai Gap. Both break the Western Ghats in the far south. Palakkad is the broadest gap and links Coimbatore with Palakkad, carrying road, rail and monsoon winds; Senkottai is the narrower southern gap linking Kollam with Tirunelveli and Madurai. Only Palakkad is credited with the rain-shadow effect on the Coimbatore plateau.
